Keeping an evening practice when the day went badly

The evening session exists for tired people. Here is how to keep it on the nights you least feel like it.

An evening practice is easy on good days and nearly impossible on bad ones — which is a shame, because the bad ones are the days it was made for.

Make it smaller

On a hard night, read only the passage. Skip the intention, skip the writing. One verse and a light switched off is a whole practice.

Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28 · BSB

Let the quiet space do the work

If words are too much, open the quiet space instead: soft light, a slow timer, rain or sea if you want it. Three minutes there is not a failure to pray.

Return without explaining yourself

There is no catching up to do. Tomorrow's passage is not waiting to be earned. Sit down, read, and begin again.
